Is there any way to kill mobs in a specific area, able to differentiate between specific mobs, hostile vs non, and/or all? This does not include difficulty since it affects the entire world and I believe it doesn't affect the Enderdragon.

I just watch a video that would help to you
Set false the mobGriefing few seconds, summon creepers blowing up in the area, set true the mobGriefing again

in 1.8 (pre) it is possible using "/kill [at]e[r=<radius>]"...
[at] means the letter between email adresses... e.g. contact[at]microsoft.com seems like the letter is blocked...

In 1.8 you can use the new @e selector, For example in your commandblock you can input: /kill @e[Type=<Animal>,<x>,<y>,<z>,<r=<radius>>] Using that you can select any entity. It can be a specific name like Joe and only kill the animals named Joe like this: /kill @e[Name="Joe"] @e is very cool and helpful. Hope this helps you -Xisuma
